Looks like the Christmas spirit has been flying over Germany lately. PhD student Daniel Neumaier at the University of Regensburg, one of the three collaborators on the project says the reason for creating this 8.4 x 12.4 micrometers calendar is simply because they want to have better Christmas pictures for their homepage. What’s cool is the open door icons on 6 random days before Christmas showing images of Santa Claus, a bell, a snowman and a church. However, at measure of 20nm, the smallest pictures are the glass panes on the church windows.
They wrapped it up with a Merry Christmas wish at the bottom of the calendar. It is stated that it would take about 5 million of these to fit on a postage stamp.
