Sony today unveiled the “WhiteMagic” 3-inch VGA LCD module, which is designed for use in smartphones and digital cameras. This LCD module utilizes the newly-developed “RGBW” method, which adds a white pixel to the RGB pixels along with an algorithm that corrects image distortion. The WhiteMagic LCD display module also reduces the power consumption required by the backlight by approximately 50%, while still keeping the display brightness equivalent to that of conventional RGB LCD modules. What makes this LCD module more interesting is that it has a special “outdoor mode”, which successfully improves outdoor visibility of the display by enhancing the display brightness to roughly double, even without the use of any additional power.
