iPhone 3G For $199 in July 11th, 2008

That’s right! Apple has finally announced the iPhone 3G with its price tag. Apple claims its 3G speed is 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750. Its battery offers 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. The handset also sports A-GPS and WiFi. The 3G iPhone is cheaper than the original iPhone. The company is expected to launch this new iPhone in 70 countries this year, with the black 8GB going for $199 and 16GB for $299 in black or white. In addition, for those who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 2008 and want a new 3G iPhone, they will be able to do so without an additional charge. However, they will need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone. [Engadget via Upcoming Cell Phones]

SlingPlayer Connects Slingbox To The 3G iPhone

Sling Media has decided to create an application that connects the Slingbox to Apple’s 3G iPhone. Dubbed as the SlingPlayer, it is an application that allows users to stream video directly from a Slingbox to a mobile device. FYI, the SlingPlayer Mobile is currently available on Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and Symbian phones, and for RIM’s BlackBerry. Unfortunately, there is no release date so far, however this application will be available by the end of this year or in early 2009. [Crave/ CNet via Upcoming Cell Phones]

Chinese Handwriting Recognition For iPhone

A Chinese website has showed us a screenshot of the character recognition software for the iPhone firmware 2.0. This interface is designed for finger use. It is capable of operating in both portrait and landscape modes. Unfortunately, it seems that Chinese is the one and only language supported so far. FYI, Apple was one of the pioneers in handwriting recognition technology with their Newton Personal Digital Assistant. [MacRumors]
