High-precision Eye Surgery Robot

Thijs Meenink from the Netherland’s Eindhoven University of Technology has developed a smart eye-surgery robot that enables ophthalmologists to operate with a higher precision on the eye’s retina and vitreous humor. The eye surgeon operates this robot using two joysticks with a haptic feedback, allowing the surgeon to feel any of the resistance put up by the patients’ tissues. The robot also has two robot arms that will copy every movements of the surgeon’s hands and carry out the actual operation. [Gizmag]

Pentax Lifecare has recently released the EB-1990i, which is claimed to be the world’s first HD video bronchoscope. Mini RFID Device From Asahi Kasei Stores Personal Medical Data

Japan-based chemical and tech company Asahi Kasei has developed a small healthcare product that allows paramedics, emergency doctors to instantly access all medical data on a specific person with a PC or a smartphone, via RFID. The company uses the FeliCa smart card technology, which has been widely adopted by all of Japan’s mobile carriers, several major PC makers, and other electronics companies. In an emergency situation, doctors or paramedics can tap Felica-equipped equipment against the device to view medical data of its owner, for example the blood type, date of birth, etc. Asahi Kasei will release this Mini RFID Device in the near future for $25 each. FDA Has Approved Ornim CerOx 3210F Monitor

Ornim has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance to market its CerOx 3210F monitor for non-invasive brain oximetry and blood flow monitoring. The CerOx 3210F device uses a single, non-invasive probe for simultaneously and independently measuring both oximetry and blood flow parameters, together providing a clear indication of tissue perfusion. All doctors need to do is attach the sensors (that have adhesive pads) to a part of the patient’s body. Currently it is also the only non-invasive continuous blood flow monitoring device available in the world though there’s been no word on when we’ll start seeing it being used in hospitals. [MDBR]

Canon has managed to develop a machine that helps detecting breast cancer without using X-rays. This machine will save patients from exposure to radiation, while the diagnosis is completely pain-free. The machine is based on laser and ultrasonic wave technology. Canon says that the first clinical studies are scheduled to begin at Kyoto University soon. The company expects to commercialize the machine within three to five years. [CrunchGear]
