
Synology has begun shipping their latest Network Attached Storage (NAS) device for the mass market. Dubbed as the DiskStation DS410, the device is equipped with a 1.6GHz processor, a 512MB of RAM, a built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption, Gigabit Ethernet, an eSATA port, two USB 2.0 ports and can accommodate up to four 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, or four 2.5-inch SSD for a maximum of 8TB of storage space. In terms of performance, it delivers an average of 115MB/s reading speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 54MB/s writing. Thecus has recently announced a new NAS device called the N4200 with 6D technology. The device is powered by a 1.66GHz Intel D510 dual-core processor with a 1GB of RAM. The Thecus N4200 also adopts the dual DOM technology offering two copies of the software needed to operate the NAS device inside the unit in case one gets corrupted. There is also a couple of displays located on the unit, where one LCD display shows system information, while the other 2.8-inch OLED display shows settings of the device like WAN, LAN, and more. Using this NAS, you will be able to mix both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drives, where the system can be configured with two RAID modes simultaneously. Synology has rolled out a pair of powerful new NAS drives namely the Synology DS1010+ and DiskStation DS110j. The Synology DS1010+ is the enterprise-grade NAS that provides a five-bay expansion enclosure that can hold either 2.5- or 3.5-inch SATA drives. It is powered by an Intel Atom D510 processor, which is an overclocked variant of the popular N450 processor. The Synology DS1010+ can manage RAID levels 1, 2 or 6. It can be networked with Ethernet or USB ports. It’s also DNLA complaint and comes with its own management software – DiskStation Manager, which can run in Windows, Mac or Linux.
The DiskStation DS110j is the consumer model that is powered by an unnamed (likely ARM-based) 800MHz processor. The device has a single drive-bay for a 2.5- or 3.5-inch SATA drive. Unlike most Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, LG’s latest N2B1 boasts a built-in Blu-ray burner for archiving data from up to 50 gigabytes into Blu-ray disc. The device features two hard drive bays, a memory card reader (SD/XD/MMX/MS), 3x USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA port, Gigabit Ethernet and is compatible with PCs, Macs and Linux machines. Buffalo has recently unveiled its latest Network Attached Storage (NAS) device called the TeraStation TS-XEL/R5. The NAS is available in 2TB, 4TB and 6TB models and supports up to four SATA hard drives in RAID 0, RAID 5, RAID 5 or 10 modes. The device also comes with an LCD screen, two USB 2.0 ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet and supports for hot-swapping, Apple’s Time Machine and Active Directory Services. Addonics has rolled out the world’s smallest Network Attached Storage (NAS) for the mass market called the Mini NAS. Measuring only 155mm x 95mm x 30mm, this Mini NAS is equipped with a 2.5-inch SATA drive bay that can house either a solid state drive (SSD) or hard drive (HDD), a USB port and 10/100Mbps Ethernet connection. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Although the Thecus N0204 is small, this network attached storage is able to hold a maximum of 1TB capacity, thanks to 2.5″ hard drives or SSDs within. Claimed as the world’s smallest NAS, the Thecus N0204 has only a couple of bays with RAID 0, 1 or JBOD configuration. The device is also compatible with both Mac and PC networks and will work with Wi-Fi orGigabit LAN via the Ethernet connection on the back of the unit. LaCie has launched the Network Space 2 Network Attached Storage (NAS) and media server that is designed by Neil Poulton. The Network Space 2 is user friendly thanks to the preloaded LaCie Network Assistant that allows users to customize the dashboard with widgets allowing them to easily access networks, drive information, user accounts, and drive capacity. The device can also stream multimedia files to any UPnP/DLNA compliant devices, including Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaming consoles. The LaCie Network Space 2 features the iTunes server software, which enables Mac or PC users play content directly from the drive instead of their local iTunes libraries. QNAP Systems has recently released the TS-110 entry level NAS server for home and SOHO users. The TS-110 supports a single 3.5-inch SATA hard drive with up to 2TB of total capacity and features a Marvell 800MHz CPU and a 256MB DDRII RAM, which provides high performance with low power consumption. The NAS can be configured with QNAP’s exclusive Q-RAID 1 for high data redundancy.
