Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) has announced the availability of two new drives under CinemaStar family. Known as the CinemaStar C5K750 and 5K2000, both hard disk drives are optimized for the growing digital video recorder (DVR), IPTV set-top-box (STB), video surveillance and emerging hard drive-embedded TV markets. The 2.5-inch CinemaStar C5K750 is Hitachi’s first CE drives in the market with Advanced Format, which increases the physical sector size on hard drives from 512 bytes to 4096 (4K) bytes. It is currently available in 750GB, 640GB and 500GB of storage spaces.

Available in 1.5TB and 2TB of storage capacities, the 3.5-inch CinemaStar 5K2000 family comes equipped with the CoolSpin technology to deliver a greater level of power efficiency and quiet operation for energy-conscious, environmentally-friendly computers. Lexar will launch the innovative Echo MX and ZX backup drives that are compatible with both Mac and Windows. Available in capacities of 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB, the Lexar Echo MX back-up drive provides a 128-bit AES encryption with a built-in Lexar Echo backup software. The device comes equipped with an easy-to-read, always-on capacity meter that displays available backup space, even when disconnected from a computer. The Echo MX also offers speeds up to 28MB/s read and 10MB/s write on lower capacities and speeds up to 30MB/s read and 17MB/s write for the 128GB capacity.

The Lexar Echo ZX back-up drive provides all the benefits of a larger backup device in a tiny, plug-and-stay USB form factor. iTwin USB File Sharing Dongle Released In The US

The iTwin USB device is now available in the US market in a limited quantity. The first batch is limited to just 50 units. The iTwin is a USB file sharing dongle that can be split into two parts. You just have one plugged into your computer and the other plugged into your friend’s computer to allow the two computers to share file over the Internet. What makes the iTwin more special is that it uses the 256-bit AES encryption to ensure the data is transferred over a secure channel. Other World Computing has unveiled the new Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual mini bus-powered portable hardware RAID storage solution that features 14 pre-configured models with hardware RAID-1 “mirrored” redundancy for “live activity” data protection, or RAID-0 “stripe” for maximum data transfer speed. Synology DiskStation DS211+ NAS Drive

Synology has expanded its DiskStation network-attached storage (NAS) line by releasing the new DiskStation DS211+. This latest model includes two hot-swappable drive bays, which allows a hard drive to be replaced in the event of a failure. Each drive bays supports 3TB hard drives, allowing the NAS to support as much as 6TB of storage space over a network. The Synology DiskStation DS211+ can be arranged in a RAID configuration that provides added redundancy to help protect against data loss. Each purchase comes bundled with Synology’s DiskStation Manager software to provide a full control for all services that are installed on the NAS. This included software also has the ability to back data up through Time Machine, audio and video streaming to UPnP devices, and a full range of third-party plug-ins, including FTP services and on-device BitTorrent (News – Alert) clients. Hitachi has unveiled its new 5,400RPM Travelstar Z5K500, which is claimed as the world’s thinnest hard disk drive for netbooks and tablets. Measuring at only 7mm thick, the drive features 1.8 Watts read/write power and 0.55 Watts low power idle. The Hitachi Travelstar Z5K500 also delivers a nearly silent operation at 1.9dB idle/ 2.1dB seek. The storage device has an 8MB cache, a Serial ATA 3Gb per second interface and physical sector size of 4,096 bytes (up to 512 bytes). Available in 500GB, 320GB and 250GB of storage capacities, the Hitachi Travelstar Z5K500 will be released to selected distributors later this month. [PCLaunches]

Other World Computing (OWC) has released the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) SSD Storage Upgrade Kit, which allows owners of the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini to upgrade the hard drive and replace it with a solid-state drive (SSD) from OWC. The kit comes equipped with OWC’s 2.5-inch Mercury Extreme Pro SSD and the capacities available range from 40GB to 480GB. OWC also provides a tool kit for performing the installation and cables for transferring data from the old drive to the new SSD. The kit also includes a 2.5-inch portable external enclosure, so you can use your old drive as a portable external drive. Toshiba has announced the availability of the new MK4001GRZB solid state drive series in the Japanese market. Available in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB of storage capacities, these 2.5-inch SSDs use the latest 32nm enterprise grade single-level cell (eSLC) NAND flash memory from Toshiba and 6Gb/sec Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. The Toshiba MK4001GRZB delivers performance that outpaces competing enterprise-class SSDs, with random sustained 90,000 IOPS during read operations and 17,000 IOPS while writing data at a sequential sustain reading speed of 510MB/s and a 230MB/s writing speed.
