Dustbot Trash Collector

Co-funded by the European Commission, the Dustbot is a US$3.9 million project that aims to create a moderately-sized trash collector robot that can navigate through narrow streets that huge garbage trucks can’t reach. The Dustbot can also analyze the quality of the surrounding air using its sensors to measure the amount of pollutants like sulfur oxide, benzene, ozone, and nitrogen oxide. I hope that the Dustbot will be equipped with a self defense system that can protect itself from thieves who want to steal this expensive robot. Video after the jump. More

The smart contact lenses use an organic polymer called PDMS that functions as a simple pressure sensor. Good news is that UC Davis will start clinical trials of these smart contact lenses in humans very soon. [io9]

Atmos 561 Clock Powered By Temperature Changes

Made by Jaeger LeCoultre and designed by Mark Newson, the Atmos 561 Clock is encased in a big block of crystal for good measure and is powered only by changes in temperature. A change in temperature of one degree Celsius can power the clock for two days. Its power source is a capsule that contains gas and ethyl chloride that reacts to the temperature change and expands against a spring in a chamber, which then converts its stored potential energy into clock power.
