Overall, HLDS has built a reliable drive that goes beyond your usual needs. Review of Toshiba HD-XE1 HD-DVD Player

Review of Toshiba HD-XE1 HD-DVD Player

TrustedReviews has reviewed the Toshiba HD-XE1 HD-DVD player that offers standard DVD upscaling, 720p; 1080i; 1080p support via HDMI, an Ethernet port, 297MHz/12 bit video DAC, and 5.1-channel analogue output. Here is the conclusion.

The true home cinema enthusiast has probably been waiting for a player to arrive with HDMI 1.3, 1080p output and an Ethernet port. But what that early adopter probably didn’t expect was for all that to come at such an affordable price. The HD-XE1 is a highly featured HD DVD player that performs superbly. Yes there are a few issues with startup and load times, as well as a lack of responsiveness in menus, but those small niggles can’t take the shine off this player. With standalone Blu-ray players still pushing £900, the HD-XE1 offers fantastic value for money and makes a pretty convincing argument for the HD DVD format. In fact, if you really want to cover all the bases right now, the best option could be to have both an HD-XE1 and a PlayStation 3 under your TV.

Toshiba PA35 External HD-DVD Drive

Toshiba PA35 External HD-DVD Drive
The Toshiba PA35 External HD-DVD Drive is the inexpensive way to do HD-DVD on your computer. It gives you HD video and sound, and also allows you to burn the standard DVD. Unfortunately, the Toshiba PA35 only allows you to read HD-DVD discs with no burning capability for them. But for ~$370, there’s not too much to complain about.

The First USB 2.0 HD-DVD Drive from HP

hp-hd100-hd-dvd.jpg

If you’re feeling sorry for your abandoned USB ports HP has good news for you. The HD100 is the first USB 2.0 based external HD-DVD player. But in order to make use of it’s HD-DVD playback, you need at least a 3.2GHz core solo Pentium or an AMD 64 X2 2.2GHz. No wonder no one’s jumping into the high def bandwagon yet. And if you want external output (duh!), you’d better have an HDMI or HDCP-compliant DVI-D cable lying around. The drive also won’t burn regular DVDs. What a bitch waste. It’s due around Christmas time this year, no known pricetag yet.
